Methodology & Transparency

How the “Is it worth it?” verdict and the rankings are produced

This is a transparency page per § 5b UWG (German law). The German version is authoritative.

1. What the “Is it worth it?” verdict is

The verdict on each game page is an automatically generated, data-driven assessment, not purchase or investment advice, and not a paid endorsement. It is computed entirely from the metrics listed below. We are not paid by developers, publishers, or Valve to rate any game a particular way, and no sponsorship or affiliate arrangement influences the verdict.

2. The parameters that determine the verdict

The verdict and its colour are derived from these factors, weighted as follows:

  • Review sentiment: the share of positive Steam reviews (roughly ≥ 70% reads as good, 55-70% as mixed, below that as weak).
  • Price per hour: the Steam price divided by the average playtime that Coilr has tracked across owners of the game (about ≤ $3/hr reads as strong value, > $6/hr as premium).
  • Sustained activity: the share of tracked owners who still played the game within roughly the last two weeks.
  • Recent review trend: a clear shift in the last few months’ review sentiment versus the all-time score can nudge the verdict up or down.

3. Where the reviews come from

  • Review sentiment comes from the public Steam reviews for each game. Coilr does not collect its own user ratings and does not verify individual Steam reviews for authenticity. Ensuring reviews originate from actual purchasers is handled by Steam/Valve.
  • Playtime metrics (“average playtime,” “still active”) are based solely on the accounts of Coilr users who own the game, not the entire Steam player base. They are therefore a sample and not necessarily representative.
  • When too few owners are tracked (fewer than three), we show no verdict, because the figures are too noisy to make a call.

4. Rankings (Charts, Sales, Trends)

Orderings of games, such as live charts, sale quality, or gainers/decliners, are based on objective, reproducible metrics: current player counts from the official Steam player API, discount depth and proximity to the all-time-low price, and review sentiment. Placement is not influenced by payment, sponsorship, or affiliate relationships.

5. No paid placements

Coilr contains no paid placements, no sponsored verdicts, and currently no affiliate links. Should we add affiliate or advertising links in the future, they will be labelled as such. General terms are set out in our Terms of Service.
