Coilr data report

The typical Steam library has never launched more than a fifth of its games

Across 408 Steam libraries, the one in the middle has never started 22% of the games in it, and 42% were either never launched or played for less than an hour. The bigger the library, the more of it sits untouched: past a thousand games, it is 49%. And the hours go into a handful: half of a typical player’s time on Steam went into just four games.

The bigger the library, the less of it gets played

A library of a few dozen games is mostly games someone chose to play: the typical one with fewer than fifty has never launched 12%. From there the share climbs with every shelf. At a few hundred games it is almost a third, and a library of a thousand or more has never started 49% of what is in it. The line is the median at each size; the band around it holds the middle half of libraries.

Famous games their owners never started

Games with more than 50,000 Steam reviews, owned by at least 40 of these libraries, ranked by how many of their owners have never launched them. Most have spent years in bundles and giveaways, which is how a game ends up owned by someone who never picked it.

The most-owned games are the opposite. Only 1.8% of the 277 libraries with Counter-Strike 2 have never launched it, and 3.3% for Terraria. Half-Life 2 sits in between: owned by 181 of these libraries, and never started in 47% of them.

Half the hours go into four games

Rank every game in a library from most played to least, and add up the hours. The favourite alone holds 22% of the typical library’s time. Four games reach half, and ten games 75%. Everything else in the library — a median of 129 games — shares what is left. In the two weeks before a library last synced, its owner played a median of four different games.

What the unplayed games would cost today

At today’s full US price, the games a typical library has never launched add up to $338, and a quarter of libraries hold more than $1,032 of them. That is not what anyone paid. Much of it arrived in bundles, sales and giveaways for a fraction of the price, and 23% of never-launched games have no current price at all and count as nothing. It is what the shelf would cost to fill again, not what it cost to fill.

Two things this is not

It is not a random sample of Steam. These are the libraries of people who signed up to Coilr to track their playtime — people who care enough about their library to want numbers on it. A typical Steam account is probably smaller and less collected, and as the size curve shows, smaller libraries leave less unplayed.

“Never launched” means Steam counted no time. A game played only offline, or before Steam began keeping playtime, can read zero; so can one played on someone else’s account through Family Sharing. Each of those makes a library look slightly less played than it is.

Method

Every library synced to Coilr from a public Steam profile, as Steam reports it: each game and the minutes played in it, ever and in the last two weeks. Every figure is worked out for each library on its own and then summarised across libraries as a median, so a collector with thousands of games counts once, the same as someone with thirty.

Left out: libraries of fewer than 10 games; libraries where every game reads zero, which is what Steam shows when an owner keeps their game details private; software and desktop toys (Wallpaper Engine, Bongo Cat); and any game its owner has hidden on Coilr. Steam lists a free-to-play game only once it has been played, so those can never count as unplayed.

Nothing here describes one person. Each point on the size curve summarises at least 40 libraries, and a game is only named once 40 libraries own it. Recomputed daily.
